History
Professor Noam Gavriely, a cardio-pulmonary physiologist and
emergency physician, and his son Oren Gavriely, founded OHK
Medical in 1999 to develop and market the HemaClear blood removal
system for worldwide distribution. An innovative mid-priced
single-use device for blood management in orthopedic surgery,
HemaClear replaces both the pneumatic tourniquet and Esmarch
with a bold new technology for the future.
A blood-free surgical environment was first introduced by Dr.
Esmarch in 1873 to provide a clearer (dryer) surgical site
and to prevent blood loss in orthopedic extremity surgery.
By creating more clarity in the surgical field, Dr Esmarch’s
technique facilitated a higher level of precision for physicians.
While a revolutionary innovation in its time, Dr. Esmarch’s
technique has evolved very little since the 19th century. In
fact, the blood removal procedures currently practiced in operating
rooms across the globe are still very similar to the Esmarch
tecnique. While effective, time has shown these procedures
to be somewhat cumbersome and inefficient. There are also numerous
reported complications and growing concerns about surgical
site infections and byproducts of stagnant blood that can potentially
impact patient care.
HemaClear was developed to take this time-honored technique
into the 21st century with a simple, sterile, and more efficient
solution to the exsanguination and occlusion methods currently
available to today’s leading medical practitioners. In
the eight years since its inception, HemaClear has evolved
into an international product with an impressive distribution
and sales record in Europe, where sales have already exceeded
70,000 units. While it’s corporate headquarters are based
in Israel along with its R&D and manufacturing facilities,
HemaClear has recently developed satellite offices in the United
States to begin introducing HemaClearTM to the competitive
American market. Product re-branding began in the fall of 2007,
which ultimately resulted in the new HemaClear identity available
to the market today. With initial American excitement about
the product snowballing into an unstoppable market force, HemaClear
has already penetrated four major US metropolitan areas.
