OHK Medical Devices brings a new solution for blood management in orthopedic
surgery, replacing a one hundred year old technique with an innovative simple
paradigm.
Blood-free environment was introduced by Dr. Esmarch in 1873, to provide a clearer
(dryer) surgical site and to prevent blood loss in orthopedic extremity surgery.
According to latest market surveys, in 2007 in the US alone 3,800,000 blood free
applicable operations were performed. The technique currently practiced in the
operating room to establish a bloodless field is very similar to that introduced
by Dr. Esmarch. Four staff members are required to apply and control all the
steps including the elimination of the blood from the limb (exsanguination),
occlusion of arterial blood flow (tourniquet) and draping the surgical site (sterility),
typically consuming 5 - 10 minutes. Beyond cumbersomeness and inefficiency there
are numerous reported complications and growing concerns about surgical site
infections and byproducts of stagnant blood.
